A LAZY AXLE FOR HEAVY DUTY WORK OR A LAZY AXLE FOR PLAY 

If you require a vehicle to carry a lot of weight then this is the way to go. A Lazy Axle added to the rear can more than double the original vehicle's carrying capacity. For example the GVM of a Landcruiser or Patrol can be increased to 4500kgs or more depending on the type of licence you have. When possible we fit original rear brakes mounted on original front hubs to the lazy axle so that the rear brakes are matched to the drive axle and replacement parts are standard to that vehicle. Each vehicle has a compressor and storage tank fitted and a tyre inflation and hose is supplied.

This is a great way to go if you don't need extra seats in the back, the shorter cabin means a better balanced vehicle for load carrying with the wheels centred under the tray. It also has the advantage of an almost standard turning circle because the chassis has't been extended


 

100 series Landcruiser converted to a Dual Cab with a standard wheelbase and a Lazy Axle fitted to increase the GVM up to 4500kgs or more

The advantages are obvious in this one, 6 adults along with a huge load makes this one the most popular set up, however care must be taken to keep heavy loads as far forward as possible to prevent light steering. Once again the turning circle is good because the chassis has not been extended.

This is the Ducks Guts of conversions for those who need to carry extra passengers and a big load. The small extension in the chassis means a slightly larger turning circle but as you can see the pair of rear wheels are centered under the tray for excellent load distrubition.


 

 FOUR AIR BAGS control the weight. The advantage of air bag suspension has long been proven in the trucking industry. We have used this technology for our lazy axle suspension to also provide load share adjustment and ride quality.

50 / 50 LOAD SHARE when fully loaded means greater payload and less strain on the chassis and running gear.

90 / 10 load share when empty means better traction and a lot smoother ride

Automatic height adjustment keeps the vehicle level wether loaded or not, while preset load sensors adjust the amount of pressure required on either front or rear axle making the ride comfortable either loaded or empty. A real bonus.


 

 TRAILING ARMS give it the flexability required to do the job properly. This combined with the air bags allow the wheels to keep contact with the road at all times.

The photo on the right shows an example of a lazy axle fitted with trailing arms and panhard rod while the bottom photo shows the amount of articulation achieved. This is virtually impossible with leaf spring suspensions.

As you can see in the photo on the right, with this sort of travel in either axle, going offroad with a lazy axle is now an option. Combine this articulation with the capability of being able to dump the air from the rear axle at the touch of a button and you will find that sand or rough roads should not be a problem.
